Storage Units and Building Upgrades

We keep our storage units up to date, along with the rest of our facility. Pest Tech stopped by recently to sanitize our building. They do a great job with making sure they get each corner and square inch of the facility. Ever since COVID-19, we have invested time and effort to keep our facility in the best quality. Check out our other blog post for what services Pest Tech does for us. We are so happy to have them helping our team!

Fresh Paint Job

Dillingham Self Storage also recently got a new paint job touch up. Honowai Painting stopped by and gave the entire building a new coat. They covered our front office and each floor! We highly recommend Honowai, it feels like we are in a new home now. A fresh coat of paint can do so much for the look and feel of a building. The building looks fresh and new now.

Storage Units get New Carts

We have also upgraded our moving carts for tenants. These come in handy when moving items in and out of your storage unit. These new carts are easy to use and have smooth handling when transporting items from your car to storage units. We are so excited about these carts, and we hope our tenants are just as excited for these!

Dillingham Self Storage offers other services like printing and van rentals. Check out our other sites for more information. All services are conveniently offered on property.

Kahanu Ventilators Storage Units

Olin with Kahanu non-profit organization has held storage units with us since 2009. They recently requested another storage unit with us. Kahanu is a project to design, manufacture, test and distribute ventilators among the islands. They need a storage unit to hold parts and completed ventilators until it’s time for distribution. We are so excited to be a part of this project and provide a safe space for these vital life-saving machines during a time like this.

Kahanu Project

The team at Kahanu is developing an open source hardware project specifically for use in emergency situations, such as the COVID-19 crisis. The project was developed at the onset of the pandemic with an aim to fill some of the demand for ventilators in hospitals.

Sanitation for Storage Units

Our storage units are highly monitored and held to the highest sanitation standards for safety and health. New cleaning procedures in place require regular sanitization of high-traffic areas such as door handles, keypads and entry ways. Face masks are required throughout the lobby and we are limiting the number of people in the lobby at a time. We also have social distancing markers in place to ensure a safe distance between individuals within the lobby. If you are curious about our other COVID policies in place, check out another blog on this. We are so happy that Kahanu is trusting us with their developments and are happy to be part of the process to help the state recover from this crisis!

Storage Units in High Demand

Storage units are in high demand in the months leading up to the summer, and especially during the summer. Everyone is moving, it’s house-buying season and people are requesting storage units. High demand means that we have a wait list. We recommend getting on our wait-list for sizes that are not available. There are some units that are more popular than others, depending on the time of year.

Storage Units Wait-List

Our unique move-out policy does not require a notice of move out. Just that you are completely moved out by the end of the month, with the lock on the unit removed. Talk to our staff to get more details on this. This policy can make it hard to tell which units will be available each month. For example, we recently had several move outs along with an auction that released many storage units all at once. We were able to get several people off the wait-list and transferred into these units that were not previously available. This is why it is important to get yourself on the wait-list if you want a storage unit that is not available right now! It could open up at any moment.

Give us a call if you are interested in our other services, like truck rentals or print services, at our Dillingham Self Storage facility.

Storage Units Have Responsibilities

Storage units come with responsibilities for both tenants and our storage staff ohana. We would like to remind tenants for how to avoid additional late fees or an auction. Here are some tips to remember to avoid late fees.

Managing Storage Units

  1. Rent is due the first of every month. There is a 6 day grace period before late fees are added. However, if your unit is not empty on the first of the month, we expect a rent payment.
  2. Avoid getting locked out of your unit and racking on more late fees by the 15th of the month.
  3. Anything left in the storage unit past the 15th day of the month can lead to the beginning of the auction process.

Although we do not like hosting auctions, it becomes a necessary responsibility for us when payments are not made. Be sure that you are able to make monthly payments before signing up for our storage units. This is important!

Affordability is Priority

Feel free to talk to our staff for recommendations and advice when you are in the process of choosing your storage unit. Although size and convenience may be your priorities, affordability should also be on the list.

FAQ’s for Self Storage Facilities

Our self storage facilities come with rules and guidelines. Each individual lease sets out the guidelines for move out procedures and due dates for rent. Rent is due on the first of each month. There is a grace period if payment is not received, but that is only before late fees are added to the due amount.

Move-Out Process

If tenants are moving out and terminating their lease, it is mandatory that all of their things be removed from the storage unit along with the lock on the front of the unit. There is no grace period for this move out process. If a tenant’s storage unit is still occupied by the first of the month, they are responsible for the next month’s rent. We are a month to month facility so as long as you are moved out by the last day of the month, you are not responsible for the next month’s rent.

Pro-rating Rent

If tenants move in to their units after the first of the month, we can prorate the rent for that month. However, if tenants move out prior to the last day of the month, we do not offer prorated rent. We do not offer rental refunds. Upon move-in paperwork, there is a one time administrative fee of $20.

Stop By Our Self Storage Facilities

We hope this helps your understanding of how our processes and self storage facilities work. We know it can be confusing at times because we are different from most storage facilities, but we are here to help. Storage Units for Disaster Relief

Storage units are really helpful for storing items in the midst of a big move.  That’s why most of our tenants are here with us. But, they are really helpful for other things too, like businesses and Team Rubicon! Team Rubicon recently joined our storage ohana.  They are part of an international disaster relief organization with teams across the globe. They help in the time of a natural disaster.

Team Rubicon

Team Rubicon was recently storing at another facility. But, in the last hurricane scare they were unable to physically access their unit because the road was flooded. One of their biggest priorities is to have access to their disaster relief supplies during a disaster!  This was a concern for them. So, they started looking for a new storage facility that offered 24 hour access and was not located in a flooding zone on the island. They found us.

Out of a Flood Zone

They contacted us in need of one of our outdoor storage units.  We put them on the waitlist but that waitlist usually takes a year to get a unit.  The outdoor units are popular. They are in high demand. Late last month we had a tenant unexpectedly move out! Although we were sad he was leaving so soon, we were happy to open up a unit for Team Rubicon.  We were excited to give them a call and get them into our facility. Although it was not an outdoor unit, they were happy to be out of a flood zone. We are so happy to have Team Rubicon with us and help them do what they do!  Welcome to the storage ohana!

Storage Units Referral Discount

We offer a referral discount for storage units if you have friends and family with us. It discounts you and your friend’s next month of rent.

Jesse’s Storage Units

Jesse came in looking for a small storage unit to store some containers. We remembered him from last year because his cousins had a unit with us and he came in to help them move their things. He was impressed that we remembered him.

At that time, we didn’t have the specific unit size he was interested in but took down his information to notify him of openings in the future. Fortunately, we had an opening the next week and gave him a call. Jesse was so happy to get that call! He dropped by that same day to sign paperwork and move in. He mentioned another facility had an opening for him but he was holding off in hope that we would have an opening.

The Referral Discount

He applied his $50 referral discount because of his cousins who are tenants with us. Jesse is such a nice person to talk to and was making us laugh the entire time he was here! We’re so glad Jesse likes our facilities and is now part of the storage family!

Storage Units for Hurricanes

Storage units can be helpful in times of emergency and natural disaster. With the recent Hurricane Lane passing through the islands, we all had our fair share in experiencing a panic and rush to prepare for the hurricane.

Panic Before the Storm

Oahu saw a rush of traffic and long lines at grocery stores in the week leading up to the expected Hurricane Lane. Gas stations also had long lines as people were stocking up on necessities to prepare for the hurricane. It was a panic, to say the least. This was one of the biggest, most potentially dangerous hurricanes the islands were expecting since Hurricane Iniki came through in 1992.  The hurricane had a minimal impact on Oahu compared to the other islands like Maui, Kauai and the Big Island.

Storage Units Preparedness

We emphasize that being prepared and having stockpiles are important things to practice. For example, your storage units could be used to fill with these necessary items in preparation for the storm or hurricane. We strongly suggest this, especially during hurricane season. Prepared storage units would come in handy for when the grocery stores sell out or when disaster strikes and your personal stockpiles run out.

Drive-up storage units

Stephen and Alicia were in search of storage units while their home is under renovation. It can be helpful to have extra space to store important furniture and other items – especially while half of the house is inaccessible!

Accessible at All Times

The couple preferred an outside drive up unit. These units are accessible at any time of the day and are easy to access because they’re on the first floor. You wouldn’t have to move your items up an elevator – it’s easy because your car is right there as you drive up. Stephen and Alicia planned on moving mostly on their own without any help so they wanted this convenient benefit.

At the time they were looking at units with us, we only had top floor units available. So, we gave them a tour of our facility so they could see what other benefits we offered.

First Floor Units are the Priority

We gave them recommendations for nearby storage places that also offer first floor units and might have more availability than we did at the time. Alicia was impressed with what we had to offer but it was a priority to have easy access to her unit.

Within an hour of checking out other storage places, they came back to us! They chose a 10×15 unit that we had showed them earlier in the day – even if it was on the top floor!

Welcome!

Thanks for choosing Dillingham Self Storage – we’re glad to have you two!

Storage Units as Office Spaces

Some of our tenants have found convenience in turning their storage units with us into office spaces.  It can be really nice for some business owners to keep their inventory close to their office.

Remy and Jace’s storage unit office

Remy and Jace have been tenants with us since 2014.  They are the events coordinator and promoters for Wonderland.  Throughout the year they’ll hold big concerts like Digital Wonderland, Winter Wonderland, Summer Wonderland, Haunted Wonderland and others.  They’re really big events that attracts hundreds of people from across the island. The concerts, also known as raves are highly publicized and well known events.

They’ve got four storage units with us to host their equipment and supplies.  They’ve turned two of these units into office spaces because it’s convenient for them.

utilizing all of our services

We offer multiple services to our tenants, like printing and storage vans.  Not all storage units utilize them, but Remy and Jace definitely do. They’re one of the few that use all of our services.  In addition to their storage units, we print all of their flyers, posters, signs, waivers and any other documents for their events.  They also use our Dilly Rentals, which they book throughout the year. They’re pretty organized and book them at the beginning of the year when they know what their schedule is.  We also accept packages for them as part of our mail service.

We love having Remy and Jace with us!
