Kahanu Ventilators Storage Units

Olin with Kahanu non-profit organization has held storage units with us since 2009. They recently requested another storage unit with us. Kahanu is a project to design, manufacture, test and distribute ventilators among the islands. They need a storage unit to hold parts and completed ventilators until it’s time for distribution. We are so excited to be a part of this project and provide a safe space for these vital life-saving machines during a time like this. 

Kahanu Project

The team at Kahanu is developing an open source hardware project specifically for use in emergency situations, such as the COVID-19 crisis. The project was developed at the onset of the pandemic with an aim to fill some of the demand for ventilators in hospitals. 

Sanitation for Storage Units

Our storage units are highly monitored and held to the highest sanitation standards for safety and health. New cleaning procedures in place require regular sanitization of high-traffic areas such as door handles, keypads and entry ways. Face masks are required throughout the lobby and we are limiting the number of people in the lobby at a time. We also have social distancing markers in place to ensure a safe distance between individuals within the lobby. Dillingham Self Storage has implemented new sanitation procedures that will most likely remain in place indefinitely. For the foreseeable future we are requiring face masks when in the lobby, both for our staff and customers. We also installed plexiglass dividers on our counters to separate interactions between staff and customers. Along with our regular sanitation procedures, we also have new cleaning regimens in place to ensure the health and safety of everyone in the office. We take our protective gear seriously! We are fully equipped here with face masks, and even face shields. We want to operate our business, safely.

Payment Deferral Plans 

We have offered 6 month payment deferral plans to tenants. This permits tenants more time to make payments while still having access to their unit. We have also waived all late fees so that payment during anytime in the month will not be penalized, even if it’s past due date. Given the circumstances of the local economy, we know that many businesses are still closed and those that are open are operating under substantial capacity constraints. 

Dillingham Self Storage in the Community

To help support our community during this time, we purchase 10 plate lunches from a local cafe every week and hand them out to whatever tenants are here when lunch is delivered. We do this as a small gesture to help local business and also get some ‘ono food out to some tenants!

Self Storage Customer Spotlight: Adele

Stay At Home Order Extension

The Stay At Home Order was recently extended to the end of May. As a result, we still have our precautionary cleaning procedures in place for now. That includes extra cleaning in addition to our daily cleaning routine of the self storage facilities as well as limiting the number of customers in the lobby at the same time. We are considered an essential business and so we are legally allowed to operate, however we would like to take these measures as a precaution to keep our staff and tenants safe. We have also waived the late fees for paying rent in May as we also did in April. 

Self Storage Tenant: Adele

One self storage tenant has been keeping our spirits high during this time of uncertainty. Adele has been with us for six years and is working full-time as a postal worker delivering mail and parcels all over the island. We love talking to her when she comes into the office. Due to the pandemic, we have not been able to chat with her like usual. However, we were able to hear from her the other day and it was a pleasant conversation. 

Adele expressed how grateful she is for having her good health and a full-time job to work. She also loves knowing that she is delivering essential items to families, like child-care products and face masks. Adele helped us to realize how many things to be grateful for in this trying time. Although it is a trying time, there are still some things we can be thankful for! What are you thankful for? We are grateful for Adele because without people like her, we would not get our mail or shipments!

Dillingham Storage Bento Drive-Through

The Dillingham Storage ohana partnered up with the Surfrider Spirit Organization to offer a bento giveaway! In the last week of April, we hosted a “bento drive-through” on Friday for anyone who saw our sign on the street driving by. With the help of our friends at the Surfrider Spirit Organization, we provided free meals to all those who drove by on Friday. It was a great time and we are so happy we could help feed the community during this time of uncertainty and hardship. 

Supporting Local Business

We love supporting local businesses and were happy to do so by purchasing bentos from a local restaurant. It is important for local business owners to support each other and keep spirits up during this time. Although the Stay-At-Home Order has been extended, we can still spread aloha from a safe distance!

Our storage ohana had a great time passing out meals to all those who drove through the front lot. It was a fun experience and a great way to meet people in the community, safely! Everyone loves bentos and we are so happy that we could provide this to members of our community. People commented on how they loved the idea and were excited to get some free lunch at Dillingham Storage on Friday!
